Since being a meat-eater, I thought that giving up meat would be the best for the universe.  But I was wrong. Food production has a significant impact on the environment. Food choices can affect the maintenance of your diet.   People who are compassionate towards animals think that giving up meat would be environment friendly, but who have relished the taste of the meat cannot give up on meat. In this blog post, we will elaborate on how to become an ethical omnivore.

The environmental impact of your food:

The food we consume daily has many factors that have an effect on our environment. The meat industry uses more than 500 gallons of water every day to meet the poultry the same amount of water can be used to grow crops and this also helps in maintaining the ecological balance.

The demand for food, clothing, and other resources increases with the rise in the population, which increases the stress in the plant.  We got to choose a wise decision if you want to become an ethical omnivore.

The usage of agricultural land:

One of the major concerns when it comes to food production is the usage of agricultural land. Agricultural land plays a significant role when it comes to the environmental impact of food production.

Agricultural products like fish and meat occupy most of the farming land, and people do industrial agriculture, which affects the habitat of wild animals. It also creates a human-animal conflict, and the habitat of animals is destroyed.

We can follow a sustainable food production system, which reduces human-animal conflict, and it also helps in the preservation of the land.

The effect of greenhouse gases:

The primary factor to consider is greenhouse gases. The food production in industry has been a part of the greenhouse gases. The significant contribution of greenhouse gases includes carbon monoxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and fluorinated gases. Different agricultural products emit a different amount of greenhouse gases. If you want to bring a change in the environment through your eating habits, then following an ethical omnivore diet will help in reducing the damages.

The usage of water:

Let us take an example if you are growing a poultry farm or chicken farm; you will need a minimum of 500 liters of water to feed the animals in farm, clean them and provide food to them, which will cost more than the cultivation of crops.

If we want to follow a sustainable eating pattern, then we must learn to follow sustainable agriculture, which helps in saving water, and it also helps in reducing the scarcity of water. Some examples of sustainable agriculture include rainwater harvesting, and drip irrigation are a few methods followed to reduce the usage of water.

How to be an ethical omnivore?

Here are a few methods which can be followed to eat in a sustainable way, which includes the consumption of meat in a minimal way.

Eat local foods:

Trying to reduce the carbon print of your damage done to the ecology is eating local foods would be the best solution. While eating local foods, you are exploring the foods grown locally and it also helps increase the support to farmers.

If you are trying to eat local foods, you also reduce the cost of transportation where the meat or poultry is carried inhumanely. This also helps in reducing greenhouse gases.

Eating local foods helps in the growth of local food vendors, and sustainable farming practices are also developed and you also get to know how your food is bought to your plate.

The consumption of red meat in moderate:

When compared to plant-based foods, beef and lamb industry are the major contributors of carbon emission in our list. This leads to the greenhouse gas effect. The meat industry produces a vast amount of greenhouse gases, which harms our ecology and disturbs the environment. The reduction of red meat reduces the carbon impact of greenhouse gases.

The consumption of plant-based protein:

Another best ways to be an ethical omnivore is to increase the consumption of plant-based food. Plant-based foods like soybean, legume, tofu, chickpeas helped in reducing the carbon footprint.

Many people say that meat is rich in dietary fiber and proteins, but it is a myth. If you follow a balanced diet in plant-based food, you get to meet their daily requirement, and this has reduced the environmental damage.

Conclusion:

Food production is the primary cause of greenhouse gases, and it also leaves a carbon print which damages the ecological balance. The best way to prevent this is to reduce the consumption of meat and poultry and support local foods, which help in maintaining the balance.
